Paying Employees “Under the Table”

When it Rains, it Pours

By Raissa Sagun, IBEX Staff

An Alberta entrepreneur owned 12 different franchises from two different franchise chains. When he bought his first franchise, times were tough and he decided to pay some of his staff “under the table.” As he continued to acquire more franchise locations, he continued to pay some of his employees at his original location under the table but put all new employees on the company payroll.

When a large U.S. competitor opened a flagship Canadian operation right down the street from his operation, within a year his operation was in trouble; the franchisor decided to take back control of his franchise. Rather than being a major relief for the entrepreneur, it turned out to be a major problem.

Within a couple of weeks the franchisor wanted all employees at the original location transferred to the corporate payroll. This transfer included completing T4s for all employees and creating Record of Employment forms for those employees being laid off. Naturally, creating the forms for his under the table employees was not possible and there were enormous consequences.

The entrepreneur was required to pay the Canada Revenue Agency all the past EI, tax and CPP contributions that should have been deducted from the employees along with the employer portions he was responsible for. The event also triggered an audit of his entire operation by CRA, which did confirm his other locations were above board, but took a huge amount of his energy at a very bad time. To make matters even worse, the entrepreneur has not been allowed to purchase any more franchises from the franchisor because of his mis-management.  Paying under the table is just not worth it!

Great Customer Feedback

We have received some pretty impressive thank you’s at IBEX for our community work and for the many times we go above and beyond to help someone in a pinch, deal with a mistake or make someone smile with an ibexseed.

We have also received many thank you’s for just doing our everyday tasks.   These thank you’s mean a lot to us and they’re always proudly posted on our bulletin board for everyone to see.  Here’s the highlights from one that we received on January 7 from a customer who just switched to IBEX:

  • It was great to work with IBEX on our first payroll.
  • Raissa did a good job of showing us the ropes.
  • Whenever we called we never got put on hold.
  • Kevin went way beyond the call of duty with the ad-hoc run for the employee we forgot to setup and pay.
  • I feel confident that I will still be this happy in two weeks on our next run.  Everything worked really well.
  • THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

Unsolicited feedback like this is good for the soul.  It motivates us and tells us we’re on the right track.

While Alpine Crew (our customer service team) was specifically mentioned in this letter, we know there’s a whole Herd supporting their efforts.  It’s the commitment of the whole Herd in all areas of the company that enables us to provide this type of service.

It’s this combination of great people and an amazing new payroll platform that makes me feel so good about the future of IBEX.  I know we’re only going to get better.

Hugs in a Box

Yesterday one of our most effervescent, amazing, energetic and entertaining customers was not her usual self, not at all.  She was down, way down.

Susan Turner, Culture Queen and Payroll Specialist, noticed our customer was in need of hugs and alerted the whole Alpine Crew.  It was time for an ibexseed!

The Alpine Crew met and with leadership from Raissa and help from Jill,  we put together  ”Hugs in a Box”.

Recipe for Hugs in a Box

  • a poem (see below).
  • a personal note from Alpine Crew.
  • a teddy bear.
  • a bunch of Hershey’s hugs in an IBEX mug.

We sent it all out by courier and we hope that in some small way we brightened her day.

The Power of a (((Hug)))

There’s something in a simple hug

That always warms the heart;

It welcomes us back home

And makes it easier to part.

A hug’s the way to share the joy

And sad times we go through,

Or just a way for friends to say

They like you ‘cuz you’re you.

Hugs are meant for anyone

For whom we really care-

From your grandma to your neighbor,

Or a cuddly teddy bear.

A hug is an amazing thing–

It’s just the perfect way

To show the love we’re feeling

But can’t find the words to say.

It’s funny how a little hug

Makes everyone feel good;

In every place and language,

It’s always understood.

And hugs don’t need equipment,

Special batteries, or parts–

Just open up your arms

And open up your hearts.

Raissa “ibexseeds” Expectations

By Darryl Stewart, Head of the Herd

At IBEX we try to identify and nurture each Herd member’s passions and put them to work for The Herd member and for IBEX.

One Herd member, Raissa, showed us early on how creative she could be (with a very unique approach to getting hired) and once she joined The Herd, showed us all how caring and giving she was.  Through our coaching process, Raissa came to take ownership of a new program with the vague goal of showing our customers how much we care.

Raissa ran with this vague goal and brought it to life in an amazing way.  The result was “ibexseeds”.  By Raissa’s definition ibexseeds are actions performed by IBEX that EXCEED what customers expect of their payroll provider.  In these random acts, the extra thought we show and the extra effort we give plant SEEDS of love, concern and value in the minds and hearts of our customers.

Two ibexseeds have been planted so far and the response, to say the least, has been phenomenal.  It is amazing what you can accomplish with a random act of kindness and it is also amazing what can happen when you nurture the passions of a Herd member.
