Performance Reviews
Organizational & HR

Performance reviews aren't as easy as they look.

In anticipation of their summer break, most school kids already know if they're going to receive that passing grade that is the segue to surf, sun and fun for two glorious months. With standardized testing and structured, division-wide performance reviews leading the charge in student evaluations, most kids will be prepared when they skip (or skulk) out the door this Friday.

Not so for employees who are due for their annual review.

For many employees, the annual review process can be a source of anxiety as they try to recall what they did well over the previous 12 months in an effort to provide balance to the actions or deeds they'd much rather forget. For managers, annual reviews can be a source of stress because preparation is time consuming, taking the time to conduct the review is often seen as a burden and many managers aren't comfortable with conducting the meeting.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Barbara Bowes of LBG says many employers don't realize how the lack of training and poor implementation of the performance appraisal process can put the company at risk.

"The performance appraisal process, as used in many companies today, is really a remnant of the old command and control style of working," says Bowes. "Reviewing and revamping your review process can take a lot of pressure off both managers and employees while increasing morale in the workplace."

And while an overhaul of the process is time consuming, there are a number of steps employers can take in the meantime to smooth out the process.
