Notice of Termination by Province


Employers may terminate an employee’s employment only by giving the employee proper notice of the termination, paying the employee the required termination pay (pay in lieu of notice), or using a combination of both.

The required notice of termination by province is listed below:


Alberta

2 to 4 years 2 weeks
4 to 6 years 4 weeks

8 to 10 years 6 weeks
10 years or more 8 weeks


British Columbia

after 1 year 2 weeks
after 3 years 3 weeks, plus 1 week for each additional year of employment to a maximum of 8 years
